5 Surfboards You Should Try Behind Your Boat

July 16th, 2008

Real surfboard types you should try for wake surfing purposes…

1. Fish - Fishes are great because the float very well and they are pretty fast. There also pretty skatey so you can play around the wake with them and have some real fun.

2. Thruster - Nothing can match the performance of a thruster surfboard. Try some nice snaps off the top.

3. Pod - Pods are fun for just drawing lines in the waves, do the same on the wake. They feel smooth and turn like a dream.

4. Single fin egg - Eggs are typically a bigger board so try and get a really small one. You don’t want to go bigger than 6ft unless your boat puts out a sick wake. These are fun for just gliding along the wake. Go about a 1-2 miles per hour faster in the boat for best results, this will give a little bit longer wake and you’ll still keep up fine.

5. Mini-longboard - When you just want to get straight silly with it and hang 10 all day long. Also fun for riding tandem, if you can pull it off.

Wake Surfing Overview

October 10th, 2007

Wake surfing is where you use a wake surfboard to ride the wake behind a boat. The wake mimics a wave in the ocean, hence the reference to surfing.

Wake surfing isn’t completely like surfing though. While the wake can still be fun to rip, there’s nothing like paddling into an 8ft barrel.

The board you use for wake surfing is like a cross between a surfboard and a wakeboard, although you can just use a regular surfboard. I recommend using a really small thruster or a small fish. I even rode a Al Merrick pod and it ripped. You can still have a ton of fun behind the boat.

You drive the wakeboarding boat at slower speed, ideally to use a V-Drive instead of an I-Drive since the V has a much bigger wake. Load everyone to one side of the boat, your toe side. Drive really slow in a big drawn out circle. Then rip.
